Pendant light above the dining table: at what height should you hang it?

Hanglamp boven eettafel: op welke hoogte hang je hem?

The dining table is the heart of your dining room — and the pendant lamp above it largely determines the atmosphere. But at what height exactly should you hang such a lamp? Too low and the light will be in your eyes. Too high and the effect is lost. In this article, you'll read the golden rule, plus tips for every situation.

## The golden rule: 70 to 80 cm above the table top

The most common guideline for hanging a pendant lamp above the dining table is:

> **The bottom of the lamp hangs 70 to 80 cm above the table top.**

This is not a random number. At this height:
- The lamp optimally illuminates the table without glare
- You create a cozy, intimate atmosphere
- There remains sufficient clear view for people at the table

With a standard ceiling height of 2.60 meters, the lamp will then hang at approximately 1.80 meters above the floor — comfortable for most people to walk under.

## Exceptions to the rule

### Higher ceilings (more than 3 meters)
Do you have a high ceiling, like in a loft or an older house? Then you can hang the lamp a little higher, up to **90 or even 100 cm** above the table top. This keeps the proportions balanced and prevents the lamp from looking lost in the space.

### Low ceilings (less than 2.40 meters)
For a low ceiling, you should aim for the **lower limit of 65 cm**. Keep in mind that someone standing up from the table should not hit their head on the lamp.

### Large or spherical lampshades
A lamp with a large, spherical shade diffuses light in all directions. Here you can go a little higher — up to **85 cm** — because the light also falls on the table from the sides.

### Directed lampshades (spots or cones)
For a lamp with a directed shade, such as a dome lamp or an industrial spot, you hang it slightly lower — around **65 to 70 cm** — so that the light is beautifully concentrated on the tabletop.

## One lamp or several?

### Round table
**One central pendant lamp** works best above a round table. Choose a model with a diameter of approximately **one third of the table diameter**. For a table of 120 cm, choose a lamp of 40 cm diameter.

### Rectangular table
Above a rectangular table, there are two options:

**Option 1: One large lamp**
Choose an elongated or wide model that suits the length of your table. The lamp should be a maximum of **two thirds of the table length**.

**Option 2: Two or three smaller lamps**
Hang them equidistant from each other above the table. Make sure the outermost lamps do not hang further than the edges of the table. This creates a symmetrical, stylish effect.

## How do you calculate the correct cable length?

Measure this before buying a lamp:

1. **Ceiling height** (e.g., 2.60 m)
2. **Minus the desired lamp height above the floor** (e.g., 1.80 m)
3. **= required cable length** (in this case 0.80 m or 80 cm)

Don't forget to include the height of the lamp itself. A lamp with a 30 cm shade will hang 30 cm lower at its bottom than its suspension point.

Most pendant lamps come with a cable of **1 to 1.5 meters**, which is sufficient for standard ceiling heights. For higher ceilings, you may need an extension cable.

## Centering a pendant lamp over the table: how to do it?

A common mistake: the lamp is centered in the middle of the room instead of over the table. Especially if the table is not in the middle of the room, this creates an off-kilter effect.

**The correct procedure:**
1. Determine the center point of your table
2. Measure from that point to the ceiling
3. Mark the suspension point on the ceiling with a pencil
4. Install the lamp at that point

If there is no socket or light point in the right place, there are solutions: a ceiling guide, a cord holder, or an electrician who installs a new point.

## What type of pendant lamp suits a dining table?

Not every pendant lamp is suitable for a dining table. These are the best choices:

**Dome lamp or dish model**
Classic and timeless. The shade directs light downwards, precisely onto the table. Ideal for cozy, intimate lighting.

**Industrial pendant lamp**
With concrete, metal, or glass shade. Robust and versatile. Combines well with wooden tables and black chairs.

**Rattan or wicker pendant lamp**
Warm and organic. Creates a beautiful play of light through its woven structure. Perfect for a bohemian or natural interior.

**Glass pendant lamp**
Elegant and light. Lets light play beautifully through the glass. Good for modern and classic interiors.

**Cluster or group lamp**
Multiple light sources from one suspension point. Spectacular above a large table or in a high room.

## Practical checklist for hanging

Before you start, check:

- [ ] Ceiling height measured
- [ ] Center point of the table determined
- [ ] Required cable length calculated
- [ ] Weight of the lamp checked (especially for concrete or glass)
- [ ] Suitable light source prepared (LED, correct fitting E27 or E14)
- [ ] Dimmer provided, if applicable
